The Paint Project was the brainchild of an extremely talented local artist and is privately funded. When the Paint Project began it was combined with a 2004 CDBG Grant and created quite a stir for miles around as tourists flocked to the area to see the historical buildings and dramatic paint schemes.

The project prompted much attention as it was publicized in the New York Times (May 28, 2003), Ladies Home Journal (November 2003) and Benjamin Moore’s publication “Profiles” (Winter 2004). Stories on the project also hit the airwaves as it was featured on NBC’s Today Show, CNBC, as well as all three of the local Albany based networks. What were once dilapidated and forgotten buildings have now become bright and colorful structures on the mountaintop canvas.

Today, nearly 8 years later, the Paint Project is still our most notable program. Love them or hate them, the painted projects grab your eye! One common misconception about the Paint Project is that we tell owners what colors to paint their buildings. This is completely untrue! What we do is submit several different color schemes to an owner and he/she/they choose – they may ask to change an accent color or sometimes even come to us with their preference and we may then use that scheme or change it. But the owner ALWAYS has the final say!
